Reddit API access is now available to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, allowing it to access UGC from subreddits in real-time.
ChatGPT can now link to discussions from Reddit by searching for them in real-time all thanks to a new partnership between the two companies. Reddit is a treasure trove of user-generated content, opinions, and perspectives. Notably, all these human-created discussions on Reddit, Quora, Twitter, and specific forums are quite juicy and highly valuable to train an LLM as it helps the model become more human-like in its voice.
Everything on Reddit has likely already been used to train GPT. This access through the Reddit API is more about retrieving discussions in real time (while linking to them). The content will be received on ChatGPT’s end in a structured way.
This is a two-way street, not just a monetary transaction. Reddit, in turn, is getting OpenAI’s generative AI technology to build new AI features for users and moderation. Though it’s not clear how much OpenAI paid to Reddit for this, Reddit’s earlier deal with Google for similar reasons was worth $60 million.
Reddit is a highly active platform for news as well. In a bid to consolidate it all under one roof, including web search, ChatGPT wishes to compete with Perplexity to offer answers, solutions, and perspectives. The deal with Reddit takes it one step closer to that.
Reddit published a post about this on its blog.
