Out of the 45 finalists to receive the coveted Pulitzer Prize for journalism, 5 works have used AI for research, reporting, or telling.
The Pulitzer Prize is the most esteemed award for writers of all kinds. Started back in 1917, the prize goes to the best works in newspaper, magazine, journalism, literature, and musical composition in the US. Only this year, the board made it mandatory to reveal if AI has been used for the submitted work (notably, only in the journalism category).
As a result of this, it was revealed that 5 of the 45 finalists for the highest journalism award used AI in some capacity. The board never wanted to restrict newsrooms from using AI entirely, and mandatory reporting is not a restrictive measure at all.
The results for the winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2024 have not yet been announced. The ceremony date is May 8.
