Musk’s new lawsuit against OpenAI is for manipulating him to co-found the company.
Elon Musk is suing OpenAI’s executives once more. His claim is that the executives manipulated him into co-funding the company all those years ago. OpenAI has betrayed Musk by turning the company into a largely for-profit company, while it was a non-profit for the good of humankind when started, according to Musk.
The lawsuit is a “textbook tale of altruism versus greed,” alleges the lawsuit.
This news comes after Musk withdrew his earlier lawsuit to bring back the open in OpenAI. According to Reuters, that lawsuit was dismissed without prejudice, so it can be filed again later.
It’s no secret that Musk is disgruntled by OpenAI’s recent behavior. The company has gone largely for-profit, has ditched its initial goal of developing responsible AI for the larger good, and even lapsed its agreement with Microsoft as the latest models go beyond non-general AI (all according to Elon Musk).
“The deceit is of Shakespearean proportions,” claims the lawsuit. This new lawsuit actually shares many themes with the older lawsuit. The foundational agreement to focus on improving humanity with AI has been broken now, the lawsuit claims further.
OpenAI’s defense is the same as the last time – that Musk is simply an ex-partner who’s bitter, petty, and jealous of OpenAI’s recent successes, quoting that he has always been supportive of a shift toward a for-profit status.
Marc Toberoff, Musk’s lawyer, told the New York Times that this one is much more forceful compared to the previous lawsuit, alleging OpenAI of breaking federal racketeering laws and the executives of committing numerous acts of wire fraud.
